Howard Morgen's Solo Guitar: Insights, Arranging Techniques & Classic Jazz Standards
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (March, 2000)
Authors: Bill Gerrity and Howard Morgen
Average review score:

Howard is a great teacher
I studied with Howard Morgen 30+ years ago. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had (and I've had plenty). I recommend any book by him.

Great insight
Having been a subscriber to Fingerstyle guitar player magazine (for 5 years), Howard's articles were the most clear and complete. This book is a continuation of that style.

If you want to learn about intervals, chord substitution and jazz reharmonization techniques.

This is it.

Howard Roffman: Friends & Lovers
Published in Paperback by Bruno Gmunder Verlag (September, 2002)
Author: Howard Roffman
Average review score:

The Beauty of Youth!
This is Howard Roffman's eighth book, and a beautiful display of youth it is! All 176 pages of this book showcase seven young men who are on the verge of adulthood in natural settings in and out of doors. What is intriguing about these photos is the playfulness of these very young, handsome men, who are naturally photogenic as they get naked and have fun in bed, in the woods, and in the bath. These images will someday be a beautiful history and reminder to these young men of the time when they were at perfection in their youthful beauty. Roffman knew two of these young men who introduced him to others, who were friends and some of them lovers. Roffman is a wonderful photographer and each book he publishes seems to get better and bigger. He certainly knows how to capture and freeze the beauty of youth, and his fans are thrilled that he does. This book should be in every serious collector's library. Touching and Tender, and beautifully designed!

Review
Friends & Lovers is a major new work from acclaimed photographer Howard Roffman. Friends & Lovers is Roffman's 8th photo book and at 176 pages is the largest book ever published by Bruno Gmünder.
With his signature photo-narrative style, Roffman documents the real-life relationships of 7 attractive young men in the transition between the innocence of youth and a more worldly perspective of adulthood.
The book chronicles Roffman's own journey as much as it chronicles that of the 7 young men. The journey began for Roffman in 1999 with a chance encounter between himself and a young man named Jeremy. The encounter began a sequence of introductions as each model brought a new member to the group. Inspired by the strong bonds and passionate relationships within the group, Roffman photographed these young men over a three-year period, culminating in the book.
Friends and Lovers goes far beyond Romanesque posed images of muscled men and instead creates a world of real characters not afraid to expose their true relationships or give us insights into their most intimate moments. Commenting on the book, noted photographer Tom Bianchi has stated, "Older gay men might wish that they had this kind of erotic and playful start on their romantic life journeys. Roffman's book celebrates the fact that this kind of youth . . . is real for those who choose it now. He captures many elegant tender moments that suggest that this is always how we should have been."

Howard Who?: Twelve Outstanding Stories of Speculative Fiction
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (July, 1986)
Author: Howard Waldrop
Average review score:

Outstanding Stories? Definitely
The title does not lie. This is a collection of 12 outstanding stories. Each story is a tiny gem, a short 13-25 page story that makes a large impact.

Waldrop's stories have to be read to be believed. He is able to turn the mundane into the spectacular. Take 'Man Mountain Gentian' about sumo wrestlers with telekinetic powers. Or 'Heirs of the Perisphere' about intelligent Disney robots that are mistakenly activated years after humanity mysteriously disappeared. 'Mary Margaret Road-Grader' is a fascinating story about Native American Tractor pulls. World-Fantasy-Award winning story 'The Ugly Chickens' is about a possible rediscovery of the supposedly extinct Dodo. 'God's Hooks': a story about a fishing expedition for Leviathan and the consequences thereof.

There is not a bad story in this collection. Waldrop is a towering talent in the speculative fiction scene. Unfortunately most of his works are out-of-print. He's written a lot of stories but it takes an effort to track them down. Trust me, it's worth it. Highly recommended.

Horton Hears A Waldrop!
The problem with books likes this is that publishers always try to squeeze them into some kind of recognizable category. In this case, the usual well-worn descriptions of "fantasy" or "science fiction" were avoided, but only in favor of the ambiguous genre of "speculative fiction." It's still a rough fit for Waldrop. This guy has an imagination that defies imagination. All of these are true short stories, worthy of any contemporary analysis. "Ike At The Mike" is *the* best alternative history story I've ever read. "The Ugly Chickens" is nothing short of brilliant and startling in its examination of lost possibilities. "Heirs Of The Perisphere" is heartrending in its utter simplicity. Perhaps the best recommendation of all, I met Waldrop in San Antonio in 1988, and I was duely impressed by his genuine humility and straightforwardness. He wrote this on the title page of my copy: "Thanks for finding the book. Hope you enjoy it." I pass that recommendation on to you.

I sleep alone too much
Published in Hardcover by Myndful Press (25 March, 1995)
Authors: Howard E. Harper and Decorus Inc.

Author's comment's
One late night in a Detroit hotel room, I realized that I had slept in five different cities within the past seven days. The cities were nice and all....but I was sleeping alone much too often. I reached over, turned on the light next to the bed, and began the birth of "I sleep alone too much." Married, single, male or female, sleeping alone can be a figure of speech...or in my case, missing your loved one. Special care has been taken to note where I was during the writing of each poem to my wife...as she and the surrondings of life on the road truly inspired me. Enjoy what I have written and follow my observations in "Lonesome hugged me" and "By my side". See if you too, feel that most of us sleep alone too often. H.E.Harper

Boys of the 50s become wonderful romantics of the 90s
H.E. Harper was born in a factory town in Massachusetts, where young boys were told. "poetry is for girls."Not so for H.E. Harper.Since the age of 11 , he wrote his romantic poems in the basement, attic and lit closet..only to finally be heard 40 years later!

"I sleep alone too much" is for lovers and partners who are apart a great deal, but always a dream away. You WILL be moved.

I'll Move Over: Spouse and Family Stress in Dealing with Alzheimer's
Published in Paperback by Boggs' Books (17 July, 1994)
Authors: J. Robert Boggs and Howard Alley
Average review score:

A MUST READ STORY of triumph over Alzheimer's
A "must read" for ever person whose life is touched by the "nightmare" of Alzheimer's. This is an incredible book that is written from the heart of a man whose wife, and family have suffered with this dreaded disease for over decade. As the author's oldest grandson I have seen the toll that this has taken on all those closest and most dear. This book is a tribute to the struggles, pain and triumph that one family has endured and the victory that has been known through faith in our Creator.

A first-hand account of caring for a spouse with Alzheimers
My uncle Bob, J. Robert Boggs, wrote this book out of his experience with his wife, my aunt, Doris Boggs (whom he has always called "Maxie"). For years now Bob has labored to give her care, with the help of a nursing facility in which she stays. He lives in an independent apartment the facility provides. His tenderness and love for "Maxie" is obvious in his book. He provides spiritual help for understanding why such problems can exist, as well as sharing some of his struggles along the way. His book has been given strong endorsements by numerous sources, including government leaders.

I'm Mad As Hell: The Exclusive Story of the Tax Revolt and Its Leader
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (October, 1979)
Authors: Howard. Jarvis and Robert Pack
Average review score:

The Story of His Campaign and Life
For nearly 16 years HJ argued for lower property taxes before proposition 13 became law in 1978; it was not a quick and easy task. Those who would work for any similar change may learn something from his story. From 1942 to 1991 about 25% of the Federal Defense budget was spent in California. This created a growing economy, even if it drained funds from the northeast states.

Since 1945 land prices and property taxes were booming in California. After his 1962 retirement, HJ began his involvement with the United Organization of Taxpayers. [A movement needs a cadre of dedicated workers.] It then affiliated with other organizations, and thousands of volunteers from all over the state. [The movement must be represented in all counties.] It is very important to have unity and loyalty to the group. [Fragmentation, petty quarrels, and demoralization should be avoided.] They experienced many defeats. [Expect to lose many battles before final victory.] Proposition 13 cut property taxes in half (p.9)! This set an example for the other states (p.10). It could never have been achieved without the Initiative & Referendum law in Calif. But an organization can pass around a petition and get tens of thousands of signatures. Even if it has no legal effect it will impress and scare elected officials. Calif. passed an initiative and referendum law in 1911, an extension to the right of petition. This allows the people to write a law and bypass corrupt state politicians. Without the right to petition, Proposition 13 would not have been passed.

Chapters One thru Seven tell of the work by this movement. 64,000 tax-exempt corporations and 18,000 charitable trusts paid no property taxes. Most of them were set up to get a tax break! Towns would raise assessments one year, then the tax rate the next (p.28). The enormous increases in property taxes priced young couples out of the market. And older people had lowered incomes.

Chapter 8 is his autobiography. He was born and raised in Utah. His father was a carpenter who studied law and became a judge. HJ studied law at the University of Utah by day and worked at a mill by night. He taught boxing in college, and fought as a professional. HJ also played semipro baseball for a copper mill (p.209). He had a varied and interesting life as a newspaper publisher, and then as a manufacturer. Pages 256-7 tell of his legal experiences with the patent on radio push-button tuning; they lost out to big corporations due to high level political decisions. He was part of the group that ran an ad for a Congressional candidate - they decided on "the guy in the sailor suit" (p.263).

Chapter Nine lists his political ideas. He advocates elimination all property taxes, and using income taxes (ability to pay), sales taxes (with some exemptions), and "other forms of taxes". HJ would encourage more public participation in the public business of government. He recommends limiting the size of government to limit the power of politicians. Public schools should be overhauled to create a better product. HJ wants more personal savings to replace the Social Security system. He also wants the US to have the most powerful military in the world, but doesn't want foreign entanglements.

A fine story about much more than just a tax revolt
In this book, Howard Jarvis tells his story. Mainly, the book deals with the victorious anti-tax movement in California in the beginning of 70's, but Mr. Jarvis also shares much more of his rich life experience with us. Among other, we'll learn how Mr. Jarvis successfully fought the trade unions' sabotage during WWII. The different subjects are in approppriate proportions and presented in a very interesting style. Even though I'm rather ignorant and uninterested of US inner politics, I found the book really fascinating.

I have just one advice to the readers of this book. The idea of forcing the hated clique of parasite politicians and civil servants on their knees might seem very attractive to you. However, I read lately that both Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann got killed under mysterious circumstances shortly after their triumph with the tax proposal. I don't know if it's true or not, but my advice would still be to avoid confronting governments openly. (Read "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World" by Harry Browne to learn more about this subject.)
